What Is An Airway Mouth Doctor?

An Airway Mouth Doctor (AMD) is a dentist who has been trained to diagnose and treat airway issues in a holistic way. This means that they look at the whole person, not just the mouth, when trying to find the causes of problems. We do this by correcting the oral infrastructure so that it supports ABCDES: Alignment, Breathing, Circulation, Digestion, Energy, and Sleep.

Your airway is the path that air takes from your nose and mouth to your lungs. The size, shape and orientation of your upper and lower jaws has a significant impact on how efficiently you’re able to breath, especially while you’re sleeping. When your airway is blocked or impaired, this can have a detrimental effect on your overall health. For example, snoring, sleep apnea, teeth grinding, TMJ, chronic pain, fatigue, and a host of other health challenges can all have the root cause of an impaired mouth.

As a licensed AMD, I use a variety of techniques to help their patients improve airway function and overall health:

  • Dental appliances: Dental appliances can be used to reposition the jaw and tongue, which can help to open up the airway.
  • Myofunctional therapy: Myofunctional therapy is a type of therapy that helps to improve the way the muscles in the mouth and face work. This can help to improve airway function and reduce snoring.
  • Diet and lifestyle changes: I may also recommend changes to your diet and lifestyle, such as losing weight, quitting smoking, and exercising regularly. These changes can help to improve your airway health and overall health.
  • Collaboration with other health care professionals. Often with an impaired mouth, patients can benefit from seeing a chiropractor and a holistic MD.

What are the benefits of seeing an AMD?

  • Two thumbs up!

It was so nice to see how Dr. Laura and her staff have made the lovely new office their own. Even after the many years I have been a patient, I am always impressed with how their warm, professional manner helps to make the procedures understandable and as pleasant as possible. Two thumbs up!

  • Very Professional and Relaxing

I had a cavity and crown prep. The doctor and staff did a bang up job. Very professional and relaxing. Holding my tongue down as they stated could lift 600 lbs and my small mouth to work in they earned their money. However, they were great about it and worked diligently to get me through this.
